Die Gegend ist für Ihre Vielfalt an Sehenswürdigkeiten und aktiver Erholung bekannt. Viele Ausflugsziele erreichen Sie per Fuß, mit dem Rad oder Motorrad, mit dem Bus oder dem Zug.
Viele Persönlichkeiten, wie Goethe und Schiller haben das Schwarzatal mit seinen Seitentälern und Höhen kennengelernt und auch der Pädagoge Friedrich Fröbel hat hier gelebt.
Sitzendorf gilt als Geburtsstätte des Thüringer Porzellans: Im Jahr 1760 konnte Georg Heinrich Macheleid (ohne das Geheimrezept des Meissner Porzellanerfinders Böttger zu kennen) durch eigene Versuche die komplizierte Herstellung "nacherfinden".
